Scrap plastic material is introduced into a machine which reduces the volume and density to permit easier storage and transport. Material property changes caused by shrinkage during heating allow easy sepn. of different materials. Also claimed is a process for sorting different types of thermoplastic pellets e.g, non-shrinkable from shrinkable or separating unwanted materials e.g, paper from plastic. Higher density, shrunk thermoplastics are easily separated using e.g, sieving or flotation. Process machinery contains high speed mills or hammers for size reduction and an integral heating section for polymer shrinkage. The machine is compact and portable. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process and machine are used for volume reduction and sepn. of scrap plastic esp. oriented materials. The machine is portable allowing easy transport to the source of scrap plastics. Transport costs of scrap plastic are reduced. Easy sepn. of oriented from non-oriented material is realised
