PURPOSE:To project and display a high-quality multicolor image with high contrast and good color tone. CONSTITUTION:The color images of red, green and blue are displayed by one color on three STN type liquid crystal display elements LCD1, LCD2 and LCD3, and the image light beams of red, green and blue emitted from the respective liquid crystal display elements are synthesized to be a multicolor image light beam to be projected on a projection surface. 1st and 2nd phase plates 13 and 14, 23 and 24, and 33 and 34 having specified retardation are respectively arranged between the liquid crystal cells 10, 20 and 30 of the respective liquid crystal display elements and emitting side polarizing plates 12, 22 and 32. Then, the light beams of red, green and blue transmitted through the liquid crystal cells 10, 20 and 30 of the respective liquid crystal display elements are respectively corrected to linearly polarized light to be made incident on the polarizing plates 12, 22 and 32. |
