CANADA CONSTANT FORCE GAS SPRING JAMES KLASSEN A constant force gas spring has a primary cylinder, a secondary cylinder or piston movable within the primary cylinder, and a rod fixed to the primary cylinder and extending into the secondary cylinder. A diaphragm connects between the primary and secondary cylinders, and the primary cylinder is dimensioned to allow the diaphragm to expand as the secondary cylinder moves away from full compression, with the result that the gas spring gives a constant force along the line of travel of the secondary cylinder. The cross-sectional area of the secondary cylinder is kept to a minimum, which extends the range of the constant force for a given volume and allows the gas spring to be made with reduced volume for a given range. The effective cross-sectional area of the secondary cylinder is kept to a minimum even when its circumference is increased by enlarging the rod, and by making the secondary cylinder elliptical. A compound flare section for the primary cylinder is also described.
