Determination of the tritium content of liq. or solid samples (4). The sample (4) which may contain other radionuclide in addn. to tritium is contained in a gas tight capsule which is permeable only to hydrogen isotope ions. By heating of an outer container (1) which contains the capsule the tritium ions dissociate and are then free to diffuse through the capsule (5) walls. The container (1) is supplied with inert gas (N, Ar) to ensure a partial pressure across the wall is maintained. The tritium containing inert gas is combined with acidic gas (11) in a further container (2) when they react to produce tritium steam. This is passed to scintillation chambers (3) where the tritiums activity is measured directly. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process and apparatus permit the accurate determination of the tritium content of a radioactive sample which may include other radionuclides.
