MIAB WELDING MACHINE An apparatus for magnetically impelled arc butt welding (MIAB), particularly for welding pipes, is described. The welding head of the apparatus is disposed outside the pipe being welded. The apparatus has a pair of clamps which are operable so as to receive the pipes from above (i.e., the clamps open in an upward direction, so the pipes may be lowered into the apparatus). A MIAB welding method for welding pipes is also described. The method requires that the pipe movement be monitored during the forging step of the welding. By monitoring the pipe movement, the amount of pipe which is lost as "upset" during the welding operation may be calculated.
