The present invention relates to the use of ring-brominated phthalic acid derivatives, optionally in combination with polyalkylene oxides of the formula (V) in which R is H, C1-C6-alkyl, tetrahydropyranyl or a silyl radical, R' is H or C1-C6-alkyl and X is an integer from 1 to 100, for stabilising thermoplastic polycarbonates against the effect of gamma rays.
