The gas inlet temp. at the expansion unit (14) is the max. permissable for the material of the latter. This temp. and also the gas pressure, are such as to keep the temp. of the gas (32) leaving the unit outlet to the min. when the engine is running. The latter (16) can be four-stroke piston engine with inlet and exhaust ports, the latter ports being connected to the expansion unit inlet. Gas outlet temp. can be kept low by a pressure-charger (18) with charge-air cooling, connected to the engine inlet. The engine exhaust can be divided into high and low-pressure portions, feed respectively to high- and low-pressure stages in the expansion unit. USE/ADVANTAGE - Combines power of gas-turbine with thermal efficiency of diesel engine.
