The adjustable resistor may be used as a load or a starting rheostat for powerful DC machines. It does not contain mobile elements and allows smooth and contactless adjustment of resistance. The resistor comprises several uniform non- adjustable resistors (1, 2 and 3), shunted individually by identical capacitors (4, 5 and 6). The first terminals of the formed parallel RC groups are connected in a common point which represents the minus terminal of the resistor. The second terminal of each RC-group is connected to the cathode of the corresponding resistor (7, 8 and 9), whose anodes are connected to one of the terminals of a bobbin (10), the other terminal of which is the plus outlet of the resistor. The managing electrodes of the thyristors (7, 8 and 9) are connected to a generator of periodical short OFF pulses (11), displaced in time at equal intervals.<IMAGE>
