The drive unit is for a four wheel drive vehicle. The vehicle has an engine (1) mounted at the front and has a rear axle drive. The front wheel drive system includes an intermediate shaft (16) which passes through the engine oil sump (17) such that the distances between the axle centres of the intermediate shaft and the wheel drive shafts are each bridged by an intermediate drive (10, 18) arranged to the left and right of the engine.
