The video recorder has two heads (K1, K2). The first head (K1) records an analogue signal comprising 3.8 to 4.8 MHz FM luminance picture carriers (BT) and a colour carrier (Fm) offset to 627 kHz on one track (A) to the full depth (So) of the magnetic layer on the tape (T). The first head has a gap of 0.4 micron and an azimuth angle of plus or minus 6 deg.. The second head (K2), with 0.2 micron gap and 30 deg. azimuth angle, records the digital signal in an upper portion (S1) only of another narrower track (B) which carries 1.4 and 1.8 MHz sound carriers (T1, T2) below the 9.7 MHz bandwidth picture signal (MPEG). USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for S-VHS video signals, compatible recording of digital picture signal is possible without much extra cost and with no more tape consumption.
