PURPOSE:A mixture containing silicon oxide source, carbon source and sodium fluoride source in a specific proportion is heated in a non-oxidative atmosphere to produce SiC whiskers in high yield. CONSTITUTION:A mixture consisting of silicon dioxide source, carbon source at 0.3-3 molar ratio to the silicon dioxide, and sodium fluoride source at 1/24-4/3 molar ratio to the silicon dioxide is heated in a non-oxidative atmosphere. The temperature preferably ranges from 1,400-1,700 deg.C. Sedimented silicic acid anhydride is preferred as the SiO2 source, but other SiO2 material such as aerosil may be used. The carbon source may be both high-reactive substance such as activated carbon or graphitic substance such as carbon black. The sodium fluoride source is preferably NaF, but other fluorides such as Na3AlF6 may be used. |
