New poly-1-sulpho:propyl-3,4-di:methylene-pyrrolidinium betaine(s) - are useful as viscosifier(s) in enhanced oil recovery or as sacrificial agents in surfactants flooding

Poly-1-(3-sulphopropyl)-3,4- dimethylene-pyrrolidinium betaines of formula (I) are new: R is H, 1-22C alkyl or alkylcarbamoylmethyl; A is H, SO3H or SO3M; M is a cation; and n is the degree of polymerisation. (I) are prepd. by reacting a triallylammonium salt of formula (II) (X is an anion, pref. Cl or Br) with 2-2.5 molar equivs. of a metal bisulphite (esp. NaHSO3) in an aq. medium of pH 1.5-10. The reaction is pref. effected by adding 0.01-0.5 equivs. of the bisulphite at pH 5-10 while aerating the reaction mixt., and then adding the rest of the bisulphite, adjusting the pH to 1.5-5 with a mineral acid, and adding 0.01-1 equiv. of a peroxydisulphate. USE - (I) are useful in enhanced oil recovery operations as water or brine viscosifiers or as sacrificial agents in surfactant flooding.
