A nuclear reactor fuel element having a top fitting (3) and a water pipe (6) held with one end on a bottom fitting (2) has at the other end of the water pipe (6) an elongated extension member having two mutually coaxial submembers (11, 12) of which one (12) forms an end of the extension member which engages in the top fitting (3) and is held on the top fitting (3), and the other (11) forms another end of the extension member, which is screwed into the water pipe (6), or into which the water pipe (6) is screwed; one submember (11, 12) is screwed into the other (12, 11) and, in order to permit the end of the extension member engaging in the top fitting (3) to be held so that it can rotate, there is seated on the submember (12) which is screwed into the other submember (11) a lock/jam nut (20) which is braced against this other submember (11). <IMAGE>
