The invention relates to a method for treating diseases or disorders of the inner ear which are related to damage to or the destruction of sensory cells of the inner ear. According to said method at least one active ingredient is used for the regeneration of the sensory cells which at least partly inhibits or eliminates the inhibiting action of a cell cycle inhibitor present in the inner ear, and regeneration of the sensory cells of the inner ear is preferably achieved by stimulating the proliferation of supporting cells. The sensory cells of the inner ear are the hair sensory cells. Potential cell cycle inhibitors are cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors and particularly the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p27Kip1.
