In the heat treatment of metallic workpieces in a gas-heated through-furnace in the presence of a gas atmos. comprising N2, H2 and CO, the novelty is that the gas atmos. is formed from a treatment gas contg. N2, H2 and CO, which is supplied to the furnace in the region of its hot zone and which is produced by catalytic conversion of a hydrocarbon- and air-contg. gas, immediately before entry into the furnace, and by supplying nitrogen at both sides of the treatment gas supply point, between the furnace inlet and the hot zone and between the hot zone and the furnace outlet. A through-furnace for carrying out the process is also claimed.
