The method controls the apparatus displaying characters and figures, neccessary for safe automobile drive, on the rear part of the automobile to make the rear automobile driver recognize the drive conditions of the front automobile. The method comprises a step of deciding which switch operates; a step of assigning the address of data ROM storing character data corresponding to an operated switch among a brake switch, an emergency switch, a test switch, a under-repair switch, a left/right direction switch, and a relief demand switch; a step of decoding the correspondent character data, recording the decoded data in a clock decoder and a data latch, and transmitting the character data to a character displayer.
