The present invention is an apparatus, a holder (10), for carrying a prosthetic ring (50) which allows for manipulation and handling of the ring (50) during implantation in a heart. Features of the holder (10) allow for secure retention of the ring during implantation procedures, and easy removal of the holder from the implanted ring (50) at the appropriate time. The apparatus includes a holder body (12) configured to fit the ring (50). A boss (18) including at least a partial generally cylindrical portion which extends around the holder body. A backing lip (22) extends from a proximal end (21) of the boss (18) and has a diameter that is greater than a diameter of the boss (18). A shoulder tab (24) extends beyond a diameter of the boss (18) at a distal end (21) of the boss (18), which is adapted to secure the prosthetic ring (50) between the backing lip (22) and the tab (24). Suture holes (40, 42a, 42b) or a flexible tab (100) secure the prosthetic ring (50) at a second point diametrically opposite the shoulder tab (24). Relief areas (20) are formed by removing material at various locations on the holder (10), allowing the cylindrical boss (18) to be tilted at an angle within the prosthetic ring (50). Tilting disengages the shoulder tab (24) and allows for friction-free removal of the holder (10) from the ring (50). A boss (18) may extend from the distal end of the holder which is configured to interface with any type or configuration of mechanical heart valve, such that the valve may be rotated during implantation.
