<p>A tool (10) that is retrofit to a conventional arthroscope (14) to add multiple functions. The tool includes a sheath (12) that receives the elongate tube of the arthroscope (14) and a lock (20) that detachably secures the tool (10) to the arthroscope (14). A hollow base member (22) is mounted to the sheath (12), and a first opening (26) formed in the sheath provides fluid communication between the hollow interior (24) of the base member (22) and the sheath (12). An irrigation control valve (28) is mounted to the base member (22) and supplies irrigation fluid to the site of the surgical procedure through an elongate flexible needle (30) that extends from the irrigation control valve (28) to the distal end (11) of the sheath (12). A suction control valve (34) has an inlet (39) in communication with a source of negative pressure and vaccuums irrigation fluid and surgical debris from the site. A laser tube (50) intersects the sheath (12) at a second opening (52) at an angle and delivers coherent light to the site. Thus, the tool (10) adds a total of three functions to the arthroscope (14).</p> |
