A method of preserving and/or reacquiring synchronisation of ATM cells in an ATM cell transmission system, the cells each including a header 21 and payload 20, includes the steps of encoding the header and payload (e.g. using Reed Solomon forward error correction coding) and interleaving the bits of the encoded header and payload along with synchronisation data 22 within a transmission frame for the individual cell. The synchronisation data may comprise a 31 bit maximal length sequence code having good autocorrelation properties. |
