The method for preparing melamine comprises reacting a quanidine deriv. of formula (I) with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) as a catalyst and a solvent. In (I), R1 and R2=H, methyl or ethyl; if one of R1 and R2 is ethyl, the other is H. The quanidine deriv. of formula (I) is prepd. by reacting carbonate, chlorate, sulfate or nitrate of the cpd. with a methanol soln. of sodium methoxide. Melamine is a useful compound in the synthesis of aminoplastic polymers, dyestuffs, papers, paints or agricultural chemicals.
