A process for preparing a compound of formula (I): <IMAGE> wherein each of R1 and R2 is, independently, hydrogen or an organic residue comprises reacting a compound of formula II: <IMAGE> wherein R1 and R2 are as above defined, with a radical initiator, in the presence of molecular oxygen, typically pure O2 or air. The compounds of the formula (I) are useful intermediates for the production of many useful beta -lactam antibiotics.
