3-Acetyl-1-cyclopropyl-1,4-dihydro-6,7-difluoro-4-oxoquinoline of formula (I) is new. Also claimed is the prepn. of (I) which comprises a cyclization of a cpd. of formula (II) in dioxane, TMF or DMF in the presence of an acid-bonding agent selected from metal hydride, metal fluoride, potassium t-butoxide or DBU. The cpd. (II) is prepd. by reacting a cpd. of formula (III) with triethyl ortho formate, anhydrous HAc and cyclopropylamine. Also claimed are the cpd. of formula (II) and the cpd. of formula (III). The cpd. (I) is useful as an intermediate in the mfr. of cyprofloxacin antibacterials.
