A hydraulic braking system has an anti-skid device including brake pressure modulating valves 11, 20, of which valve 11 is open during normal brake application, and a return-pump 23, and a pressure-regulating valve 31 which is open during normal brake application and closed, when the anti-skid device is operational, by the output pressure from the pump. If the anti-skid device fails, the valves 11, 20 will remain closed and pressure fluid from the master cylinder 3 will flow to the rear wheel brakes 5, 7 via the valve 31 which, when the master cylinder output pressure exceeds a predetermined value, will act as a proportioning valve. <IMAGE>
