Provided is a lithium ion battery which comprises a separator having a shutdown function and a heat resistant function. In order to solve the above-mentioned problem, a lithium ion battery according to the present invention is obtained by forming, on a negative electrode layer that is formed on the surface of a collector foil, an insulating layer having a two-layer structure, wherein a silica particle layer forms the lower layer and a polypropylene particle layer forms the upper layer, is formed by a single coating process that uses an insulating material containing two kinds of fine particles having specific gravities different from each other. Similarly, on a positive electrode layer that is formed on the surface of a collector foil, an insulating layer having a two-layer structure, wherein a silica particle layer forms the lower layer and a polypropylene particle layer forms the upper layer, is formed by a single coating process that uses an insulating material containing two kinds of fine particles having specific gravities different from each other. The silica particle layer has a heat resistant function, and the polypropylene particle layer has a shutdown function.
