The decoder comprises at least two decoding stages one with substages associated respectively with sections. Each substage evaluates between multiple sets of possible partial codewords and the partial codewords comprise the corresponding Ni of the symbols appearing in a subset of the codewords. One partial codeword is selected as a survivor from each of the multiple sets. The selection is based on the distances. Information is provided to the other decoding stage indicative of each of the multiple survivors and its distance. Each substage of the second stage corresponds to a supersection made up of a combination of two parts each being a section or a supersection combined in an earlier substage. A final substage corresponds to a final supersection whose parts make up the complete N-type.
