In order to detect ethanol in the lacrimal fluid an open eye of a subject is enclosed in an eyepiece (9) which defines a chamber above the eye. An ethanol vapor sensor (15) is mounted on the upper edge (11) of the eyepiece (9) in a spaced relationship to the eye. After calibration of the sensor (15) the ethanol vapor concentration in the lacrimal fluid exuded by the eye is measured.
