PURPOSE:To obtain a novel phenol derivative high in the concentration of developed color, also excellent in chemical resistance, useful as an electron- accepting compound for recording materials having a good storage stability in non-image part and in image part. CONSTITUTION:The objective phenol derivative of formula I (R1-R3 are each H, halogen, OH, substituted or non-substituted alkyl, alkoxy or CN; Ar is substituted or non-substituted aryl; Y is substituted or non-substituted alkyl or aralkyl), e.g. 2-phenyl-4-benzylsulfonylphenol. This compound can easily be obtained by oxidation of a novel sulfide derivative of formula II prepared by reaction of the corresponding thiohydroquinone with an alkyl compound, Also, this compound as an electron-accepting compound can be combined with another electron-accepting compound, and in this case, the amount of the compound of the formula I to be used is pref. >=50wt.%, and the weight ratio of an electron-donating colorless dye to this electron-accepting compound is pref. (1:10) to (1:1), esp. (1:5) to (2:3). |
