PURPOSE: To provide a label applicator, which can automatically adjust the height from the top surface of a lay-up in order to treat with a height change along the length of the lay-up of a sheet material. CONSTITUTION: A top ply labeler, which applies labels on the top surface of a sheet material, includes a presser foot 118 and an applicator pad 120 which are arranged for relative movement to one another travel along a rectilinear path as a ram 132 of an applicator cylinder 96 is extended and retracted toward and away from the top surface of a lay-up of sheet material whereby a label 42 carrying identification information are applied at predetermined positions. The applicator cylinder 96 is mounted to a back plate 72 of a label applicator 34 for relative movement toward and away from the top ply surface to maintain the label applicator 34 at a desired elevation above the top ply.
