OF THB DISCLOSURE Increasingly, scientists, engineers, designers, and medical diagnosticians need to visualize complex three-dimensional structures stored as digital information in a computer. Graphics computers can produce useful visual images of 3D structures by diaplaying sequences of 2D projection views, each analogous to an x-ray radiograph. When displayed as an animated sequence of views each from slightly displaced orientations, the structure appears to be rotating in space before the viewer. However, as practiced in conventional volume rendering methods which rely on ray tracing techniques, practical application is limited by the extensive time required to compute projected images. We have implemented an alternate means to generate projection images based on fast Fourier transforms and the inverse Projection-Slice Theorem. Our approach requires far less computation to produce images, and offerq other advantages in providing access to systematic application of filtering, and optimal use of specialized computers.
