A polarity testing process and device are disclosed for aluminium electrolytic capacitors (11) having a metallic housing (12) and at least two terminals (13, 14) with differing polarity. A test alternating voltage (UG) is applied between the metallic housing (12) and both terminals (13, 14) of the capacitor and the differing currents that flow through both terminals (13, 14) are detected, for example by means of measurement resistances (17, 18) connected in these current circuits, the voltage drop at these measurement resistances (17, 18) being evaluated as measurement voltages (UK or UA). The terminal (13) having a higher current conduction and/or a lagging current flow in relation to the other terminal is then the cathode terminal (negative terminal) of the electrolytic capacitor (11).
