A method of making a tyre belt and an apparatus therefor comprises preparing a ribbon (10) which is a strip of a rubber compound (21) in which at least one belt cord (9) is embedded along the length thereof; winding at least one ribbon spirally around a transversely curved shaping face (13) of a contractible drum; decreasing the diameter of the shaping face (13), and removing the spirally wound ribbon from the shaping face (13) as a belt being a transversely curved cross section. <IMAGE>
