Device for estimating motion between images subdivided into blocks scanned in any manner, notable in that it comprises a circuit (1) for estimating the motion of the current block, memories or memory areas (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80) storing error data sets relating in particular to the current block and to already scanned image regions to which this block may be attached, a computing unit (2) for a comparative examination of these data sets according to specified criteria with a view to a decision of actual attachment of the block to one of these regions or, by default, of initialisation of a new region with the aid of this block, and a unit (3) for monitoring the links between this circuit for estimating motion, these memories or memory areas and this computing unit.
