PURPOSE:To compactly accommodate the control system of a range selector valve, besides the achievement of the conventional function that a range selector valve can be positioned at an aimed range position through the self traveling by the function of a detent mechanism even if an actuator does not stop correctly at an aimed turning position. CONSTITUTION:A controller for an automatic transmission is equipped with a control mechanism A which converts the turning drive of an actuator 50 to the rectilinear operation and transmits the operation as the selection operation for a range selecting valve 30. A prescribed play quantity delta in the turning direction is generated at the turn transmission position between the control mechanism A and the actuator 50. This play quantity delta is set within a range for allowing the operation of the control mechanism A which is necessary for the positioning function of the range selector valve 30 at least by a detent mechanism 34.
