A substrate is dyed by applying to it a biomass contg. indigo or a deriv., where the dye has been produced by a microorganism, without isolating the dye from the rest of the solid biomass before dyeing. The dry biomass and its prepn. are also claimed. The dye is a cpd. of formula (I) (R1=H or 1-4C alkyl; and R2= H, F, Cl, Br, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, OH, CN, NH2 or NO2). (I) is formed from opt. substd. indole by cloned recombinant E.coli, cells. The cells of the obtd. biomass are lysed and pref. dried prior to dyeing, to eliminate the pungent smell. Drying is pref. by spraying to obtain a powder.
