The invention concerns an arrangement for metering of a coating substance over a moving substrate, like a paper or cardboard web W. The arrangement 10 contains a coating nip N1 formed from coating rolls 11, 12 with a soft surface, via which web W being coated is made to run, the coating rolls 11, 12 are in nip contact with their own transfer rolls 13, 14 with a hard surface and the mentioned transfer rolls 13, 14 are in nip contact with metering rolls 15, 16 with a soft surface. In metering nip N2, N4 between each metering roll 15, 16 and transfer roll 13, 14 dams P1, P2 of coating substance are formed from which the coating substance is arranged when the rolls rotate to be transferred through metering nips N2, N4 over the surface of the transfer rolls 13, 14 and from there through the transfer nip N3, N4 formed by the transfer rolls 13, 14 and coating rolls 11, 12 over the surface of both coating rolls 11, 12. The coating substance is arranged to be transferred from the surface of the coating rolls in coating nip N1 to web W being coated. The metering and transfer rolls 13-16 of the coating device 10 are arranged at an essentially lower level than the coating rolls 11, 12 opposite them and the coating device 10 is provided with a device 17-20 to prevent spreading of the coating substance dams, which are specially formed in the region of the metering and transferring nips N2-N5 to the upper structures and to prevent excess coating from ending up in the coating nip N1. <IMAGE>
