A telescopic member for penetration using kinetic energy, in the form of a long rod, comprises a first element (5) having a sleeve region (6) and a second element (7) having a core region (8) which can slide axially in the sleeve region (6) of the first element (5), the relative lengths of the core and the sleeve region being such that the penetration member may be deployed telescopically from a retracted configuration in which the length of the combination of the first and of the second element is equal to L, to an extended configuration in which the length of the combination of the first and of the second element is at least equal to 4L/3, the mean mass per unit length of the sleeve region (6) lying between 50 and 300% of the mean mass per unit length of the core region (8). The penetration member may be extended by explosion or aerodynamically, and it may contain an energy-absorption device (34) intended to reduce the force acting on the second element (7) when the penetration member accelerates. <IMAGE>
