The pacer (12) includes a pulse generator and control circuits including a microprocessor. The relationship between changes in heart ejection time during exercise and the heart rate frequency is determined by a piezoresistive pressure sensor (24). This is connected into the implanted pacing lead (14) and is disposed for sensing pressure in the right venticle of the heart. In a normal heart the relationship between changes in ejection time from the right ventricle and changes in heart rate is linear. The control algorithm implenented by the microprocessor is arranged to sense the changes in ejection time from the right ventricle and the changes in heart rate and to adjust the pacing rate to maintain the required relationship between them.
