A device for the vacuum packaging of a product in a plastic packaging is provided with a welding bar and a pressure-exerting bar. One bar is arranged in a fixed position in a frame, while the other bar can move to and fro. A nozzle can be connected to a vacuum pump which can be switched on and off and this nozzle can be moved to and fro between an active position, in which the nozzle projects between the two bars, and a retracted at-rest position. The moveable bar can be displaced between an at- rest position, in which an open side of the packaging can be placed between the bars, the nozzle projecting into the packaging, and a vacuum position, in which the moveable bar, by means of a pressure-exerting strip, presses the open side of the packaging tightly around the nozzle, onto the fixed bar, and a welding position for welding the open side of the packaging closed. Both the moveable bar and the nozzle can be actuated by means of a single actuating component which, when the moveable bar is being displaced from the vacuum position into the welding position, firstly retracts the nozzle from the active position into the at-rest position.
