The method detects stolen or lost cards when the secret number entered by a user doesn't match to the secret number recorded in a card through several trials. It includes a sensing section (15) composed of photo sensors (15a,15b), a motor driving section (17) for controlling a feed motor (7) according to the output of the sensing section (15), a magnetic reader (16) for amplifying, filtering and converting the analog signal picked up by a head (6) to digital signal, and a central processing unit (11) for controlling the system according to the key signal of a key inputting section (14).
