Tetrahydroimidazo[1,4]benzodiazepines of formula wherein R<1> is C1-6alkyl optionally substituted with aryl; C3-6alkynyl; C3-6cycloalkyl; or a radical of formula: R<2>, R<3> and R<7> are hydrogen or C1-6alkyl; R<4> and R<5> are hydrogen, C1-6alkyl, halo, cyano, nitro, trifluoromethyl, hydroxy, C1-6alkyloxy, amino, mono- or di(C1-6alkyl)amino, (C1-6alkyl or aryl)carbonylamino; R<6> is C1-6alkyl; and X is OH, SH or NR<1><6>R<1><7>; the acid addition salts and stereochemically isomeric forms thereof; said compounds having antiretroviral activity. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising said compounds as active ingredient and methods of preparing said compounds and pharmaceutical compositions.
