The illumination unit (1) has a housing (44) with sockets (47, 48) for at least one gas discharge lamp (2) as well as at least one pre-switching device (31, 65) to drive the gas discharge lamp(s) (2) on a current network. The devices (31, 65) have a longitudinal mounting board (29). A core (32), with a coil (14), is attached to the board (29). Terminal clamps (37, 38) are arranged on the board (29) on both sides of the core (32) for connecting to external wiring. An electric lead (27) connects a clamp (39a) on one side of the core (32) to a clamp (41a) on the other side. ADVANTAGE - Inexpensive. Wiring inside housing can be carried out fully or more fully automatically.
