In prepn. of polyglycerols (opt. with a small amt. of cyclic components) (a) glycerol and/or diglycerol is converted, at 340-410 deg.K, with gaseous or conc. HCl, to a mxit. of the alpha-monochlorohydrin of glycerol and/or diglycerol, and glycerol and/or diglycerol, (b) the mixt., or the alpha-monochlorohydrin sepd. from the mixt., is added, at 320-410 deg.K, to alkali glycerinolate and/or diglycerinaolate, and (c) the alkali chlorides are sepd. from the glycerol and/or diglycerol-polycerol mixt., and the (di)glycerol is sepd. from the polyglycerol.
