Method and device for cutting and welding steel belts in a continuous processing line in which prior to cutting and welding, the leading belt (1) and/or following belt (2) is moved by electromagnetic chuck units (7,8,9) and brought into contact with reference blocks disposed parallel to the centre line (CC) of the processing line, so that belt side edges are brought parallel to this centre line. Electromagnetic chuck units are provided for each belt and each unit consists of an electromagnetic chuck (7a, 8a, 9a) and a pair of reference blocks (7b, 8b, 9b) associated with individual retraction and extension devices (7c, 8c, 9c).
