A coating of a viscous substance, such as varnish, adhesive or paste, is applied to a continuous strip of material by a mechanism (30) with a slot (311) which houses a rolling doctor blade (302). The mechanism is formed from extended plastics and has a longitudinal hole, in which is fitted a square tube (35) of magnetisable material, with a permanent magnet (34) inside. A layer of non-magnetic material (315) is fitted to one side of the outer surface of the tube and forms a sliding bearing surface for the doctor blade. The mechanism is pivoted about the edge of a rib (38), which extends upwards from the blade holding body (31).
