A method for producing an ester of a protein by the esterification reaction of a protein in the form of aqueous solution, fine powder or suspension with an excess amount of polyfunctional alcohol to lengthen the chain of the side chain carboxyl group of the protein; a method for producing a protein-synthetic polymer conjugate from said ester by utilizing the hydroxyl or unsaturated group of the polyfunctional alcohol present in the lengthened side chain; and a protein-synthetic polymer conjugate produced thereby.
