To reduce NOX content in fumes discharged into the atmos. from furnace plant burning oil or gas, part of the fumes are deviated from the outlet line and blown back to enter the flame-tube, downstream of the burner, at points in the flame root immediately after the flame formation. The returning fumes enter via a flange into an annular cavity between the flame tube and an outer casing: the cavity has regularly spaced injection holes round its periphery. A baffle plate ensures the flame roots form in the transverse plane which includes these holes.
