The position of a tool support in the holder of a tool-changing mechanism is monitored and the mating coupling faces between them are simultaneously cleaned. The tapered bore (4) in the holder (2) is supplied, with compressed air via a system of bores and milled recesses (5,9,10). The air pressure is distributed in an annular pattern in the bore for cleaning, together with the mating tapered face on the support. After the tool (3) has been clamped in place, further inflow of compressed air generates a back-pressure, recorded by th emachine tool as a control signal, either initiating or halting the next operation.
