A seal has been designed for joining an inspection pit pipe with thin walls, made e.g. of fibre cement or fibre reinforced plastics, to a closure lid, e.g., a thick cover plate of reinforced concrete. The two legs of the seal adjoin the fibre cement pipe. The weight of the cover compresses the leg and the inclined wall of the groove deforms the lip and presses it against the leg. The material of the seal is a mixt. of 40% natural rubber with 60% styrene-butadiene rubber with a hardness of 40-50 on the Shore A scale.
