Appts. to lay tubular fabrics in folds on a laying surface, in a stack, has an expander (15) at the final section of the laying unit (14) which supports the fabric. The laying unit (14) is continuously positioned (25-28) for height, as the laid fabric stack increases, to maintain a set vertical gap between the top layer in the stack and the bottom of the laying unit (14). The expander (15) is at a vertical slide (14a), with to-and-fro movement parallel to the laying surface (20), with a swing frame on an upper and lateral axis. The vertical gap between the laying unit (14) and the upper side of the stacked (29) fabric (2) is monitored (28) with a connection to the drive (25) of the height positioning system (25-28). The slide travels on the extending arms (23a) of a U-shaped bracket (23), with a height adjustment on a vertical frame. The monitor (28) is pref. at least one photocell at the underside of the slide or the bracket. ADVANTAGE - Designed esp. for handling wet tubular fabrics, the system imposes no markings and gives evenly-laid material with an undamaged and even stitch structure.
