In photographic material with ancillary and light-sensitive emulsion coat(s), the ancilliary coat contains cpd(s). (I) obtd by reacting a 3-6-hydric alcohol with propylene oxide. Pref (I) has an OH content of 7-15 (9.5-12.5) (wt)% and is derived from 3-6C alcohols. (I) is used together with gelatin in 0.1-10:1 ratio. The gelatin may be partly replaced by another high mol, water-soluble polymer. In an example polyethylene was coated with a soln of (A) 81.4, (B) 81.48 1 desalinated water, (A) 0, (B) 2-5 kg adduct of 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane + 5.5 propylene oxide (11.25% 0H), (A) 10, (B) 7.5 kg gelatin, 0.25 kg dioctyl sulphosuccinate (10% aq soln), 8.0 kg i-Pr0H and (A) 0.35, (B) 0.270 kg chrome alum (10% aq soln), (A) being the control. The m.pt was (A) 11, (B) 28 deg.C and gel content (A) 0, (B) 60%. On direct casting, there was (A) fluctuation in the colour coat, raster structures, no wet adhesion and loosening of the coating; (B) smooth colour coats and good wet adhesion.
